The 7th Abhisam Understanding OT Cybersecurity and IEC 62443 training workshop was held on 23rd and 24th Jan 2025 in Bengaluru. The event was attended by senior professionals from marquee organizations in India including those from ISRO  DRDO, Bharat Electronics Limited , Central Power Research Institute (CPRI),  Siemens and others.

About the IEC 62443 Training workshop

The two day event was house full and in fact overbooked, but could accommodate a couple of last minute sign ups. It was a diverse group of IT cybersecurity professionals wishing to know about OT cybersecurity, Automation and Control System professionals, scientists & engineers from India’s defense establishment, electrical engineers from government testing organizations, consultants from the Big 4, System interrogators and many more.

The training was supported by Industri-Connect Technologies and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers Bangalore chapter.

This Instructor led training workshop was led by Mandar Phadke from Abhisam and was a very lively experience that was not just talk and presentation but several individual and group exercises including a Red Team/Blue Team simulated situational gamified learning exercise that was appreciated by all participants.

 

Importance of OT cybersecurity

OT is short for Operational Technology. These are computer based systems that control  physical objects and parameters in the real world. Although these  systems do process data, their main function is to monitor and control physical objects and parameters.  Some examples of OT systems include:

* Industrial Automation and Control Systems (including DCS/PLC/SCADA/SIS)

* Building Automation Systems

* Heating, Ventilation & Airconditioning (HVAC) Control Systems

* Ship Steering & Control Systems, Marine Port cranes, Submarine controls

* Satellite Systems, Missile launch and control systems

*  Electrical Grid Management/Electrical Distribution SCADA systems

* Automated Warehouse Stacking Systems

There are more such systems and they are in many different industrial sectors.
