What is this free Hazardous Area training course?

The Abhisam free Introduction to Hazardous Areas covers all the basics of hazardous areas. As you already know, hazardous areas are certain areas in plants and facilities that have a higher risk of fire or explosion due to the properties of materials stored or processed in these areas. Typically hazardous areas are found in oil and gas fields, petroleum refineries, underground mines such as coal mines, metal processing plants, chemical manufacturing plants, natural gas facilities, etc.

Where are Hazardous Areas present?

However, the above places are not the only ones that have hazardous areas. Surprisingly, even plants that process materials which are otherwise considered non hazardous such as sugar, milk powder or flour can also have hazardous areas due to the nature of dusts that may be present that can cause dust explosions. There have been instances of sugar dust explosions and grain dust explosions that have caused great damage to not only plants and machinery but also resulted in fatal injuries to people.

Does this course cover electrical hazardous area classification?

This course is a basic introductory course on hazardous areas, which is a vast subject, contrary to what most people expect. When we wish to learn in detail about Hazardous Areas, we must understand not only basic concepts such as the properties of materials, mechanism of ignition and other aspects but must also learn about Hazardous Area Classification,  Equipment Protection Levels, Hazardous Area Instrumentation, Hazardous Area Standards and Inspections/Maintenance of hazardous area equipment.

There are different courses from Abhisam that cover all these. To understand and to obtain a certificate of competency in Hazardous Area Classification,  please take the Abhisam Hazardous Area Classification course here.

What is an ATEX Hazardous Area?

For those working in the European Union and for those suppliers who need to sell their hazardous area equipment in Europe, they also need to understand ATEX Directives. The acronym ATEX stands for ATmosphere EXplosive and is a legal requirement in EU countries. There are two directives, one applicable to the locations where hazardous areas are present and one to the equipment suppliers who need to supply ATEX compliant equipment to be used in these locations. Abhisam has a separate course on ATEX, plus the Abhisam Hazardous Area Instrumentation course includes details about ATEX that are applicable to Hazardous Area Instrumentation.

What are classified locations?

This is another term used for Hazardous Areas, mostly in the US, where hazardous area classification is on the basis of Class and Division, rather than Zones, as is in Europe and the rest of the world.  The system of Class and Division is based on NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) developed NEC (National Electrical Code).

You can learn  all about classified locations such as Class 1 Division 1 and other types in the Abhisam Hazardous Area Classification course.

You will also learn about Zone 0 hazardous areas and other zones that have been classified as per the IEC 60079 standard. IEC stands for the International Electrotechnical Commission.
