What is a Safety Instrumented System?

A Safety Instrumented System (SIS for short)  is used in many process plants to ensure continued safe operation of the process. In case of any disturbance that is likely to result in an unwanted incident the SIS automatically brings the process to a safe state and prevents loss of life, asset damage and environmental damage. For process plants that handle hazardous, toxic, explosive or other similar materials, Safety Instrumented Systems  prevent unwanted incidents from happening. What is a Safety Instrumented System? In an earlier tutorial, we explained what a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF for short) does. In case you have not read it, we encourage you to do that now. A Safety Instrumented System can be thought of  simply as a collection of Safety Instrumented Functions. Take a look at the diagram shown here. It shows three Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF1, SIF 2 and SIF 3). All of these safety …

What is a Safety Instrumented Function?

What is a Safety Instrumented Function? One of the most fundamental questions related to Functional Safety and Safety Instrumented Systems is this-what is a safety instrumented function? Once you understand what a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) means, you will immediately grasp the connection between safety instrumented functions and a Safety Instrumented System (SIS). But more on that later. Any plant or piece of equipment that has the potential to cause harm or damage to itself, the environment or to people needs protective functions. For example your car brake is a protective function. It helps stop the car almost immediately, when for example you spot a pedestrian on the road in front of your car when you are driving it. Ditto with things like pressure cookers or ovens- they all have some protective devices that prevent them from damaging themselves or the surroundings when they malfunction. What is an Instrumented Protective …

Cyber security – Oil and Gas industries

This paper  related to cyber security oil and gas industries, is available as a part of the Abhisam Industrial Cybersecurity report, which can be downloaded now. Author: H Sreedhar. Recent History of Automation in Oil & Gas   The Oil and Gas industry (O & G for short) has been a pioneer in embracing digital technology. It was one of the first industrial sectors to transition to Distributed Control Systems(DCS), from analog electronic control equipment and pneumatic instruments. This transition started in a big way, about 35 years ago, when DCS were a “hi-tech” thing.   O & G is still a tech pioneer, in the era of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial IoT. It quickly embraced concepts like the Digital Oilfield. However, this has led to newer problems related to security. The development of digital control systems and the networking, particularly with the internet, has led to increased risk …

Cybersecurity is a growing concern for all companies and organizations worldwide. However not many people are aware that IT security and OT Security are two different disciplines. IT security is what is done to make business IT systems secure (think banks, credit card unions or travel portals). OT stands for Operations Technology. Hence OT security refers to those systems that are used in manufacturing plants, storage terminals and similar to control processes and keep them safe. OT systems are primarily Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS for …
