What is the Safety Life Cycle? | Functional Safety IEC 61511

The Safety Life Cycle The Safety Life cycle is an important concept in the domain of Functional Safety. It recognizes the fact that “Safety” is not a one shot affair, or something like a standard product or service that can be obtained by a one time payment or effort. Rather Safety (including Functional Safety, Process Safety, Occupational Safety and all other branches of Industrial Safety) are a process and they follow a lifecycle concept, that is closely aligned with the lifecycle of the plant or equipment that they make safe. The picture above shows this Safety Lifecycle, as outlined in the  well accepted IEC 61511 standard, which is the de-facto “gold standard” on Functional Safety in the Process Industry. Process industries are those where bulk materials are processed in the form of solids liquids and gases such as Oil and Gas, Petroleum Refining, Chemicals manufacturing, gas based power plants and …

NIST Guide to ICS Security- Call for comments

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that is a part of the US Department of Commerce has invited public comments to update the existing NIST Guide to Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Security, SP 800-82 Rev 2 to SP 800-82 (Rev 3). The deadline for comments is May 28, 2021. An Initial Public Draft of the update, which will be published as SP 800-82 Rev. 3, is scheduled for a late 2021/early 2022 release. The original document was published in the year 2015 and the threat landscape as well as what we refer to as Industrial Control Systems have changed drastically. What new stuff should be included in SP 800-82? NIST is aware of changes to the threat landscape regarding ICS security and also about what really can be considered as an Industrial Control System. and therefore are in the process of updating this guide. They have invited public …

Intrinsic Safety Training with certification

If you have been searching for a good resource to learn Intrinsic Safety online, Abhisam has a course just for this. This easy online Intrinsic Safety Training course is the easiest and most comprehensive way to learn about this subject. What is Intrinsic Safety? Intrinsic Safety is a method of explosion protection, used to prevent triggering an ignition in a hazardous area. You may be familiar with other methods of explosion protection such as the Explosionproof method. However, there are many ways of protection used to avoid explosions in hazardous areas and explosionproof is just one such method. There are many other methods such as Intrinsic Safety, Pressurization, Purging, Increased Safety and so on. Not all methods are used in all kinds of hazardous areas. However Intrinsic Safety is the only method of protection that is allowed everywhere. What is a Hazardous Area? A hazardous area is where there is …

What is a Safety Instrumented Function?

What is a Safety Instrumented Function? One of the most fundamental questions related to Functional Safety and Safety Instrumented Systems is this-what is a safety instrumented function? Once you understand what a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) means, you will immediately grasp the connection between safety instrumented functions and a Safety Instrumented System (SIS). But more on that later. Any plant or piece of equipment that has the potential to cause harm or damage to itself, the environment or to people needs protective functions. For example your car brake is a protective function. It helps stop the car almost immediately, when for example you spot a pedestrian on the road in front of your car when you are driving it. Ditto with things like pressure cookers or ovens- they all have some protective devices that prevent them from damaging themselves or the surroundings when they malfunction. What is an Instrumented Protective …

Best VFD Training Courses

Taking the right VFD Training Courses is essential to mastering this technology and getting benefits from it. These training courses should be self paced, with easy explanations using graphics and animations and should not be just a video of a guy speaking. What is this about? As you probably already know, VFD is an acronym for Variable Frequency Drives. They are used to start, control and drive mainly AC Induction motors to and have many advantages over traditional ways of motor control. The advantages of using VFDs  include the ability to soft start & stop the motor, match the torque to that what is needed for the load, control the speed of the load  and also to save energy. Just one example of energy saving, is using a VFD drive to control the pump speed (and flow) instead of running the pump (via a Direct Online or Star-Delta starter) and …

ICS cyber security training becomes exciting

Now ICS cyber security training has become more exciting than ever. Abhisam has added an assignment module in the Industrial Cybersecurity training program, where enrolled learners take part in an exciting thriller. Background As you know this training program leads to industrial control systems security certifications that you must have, in today’s industrial automation world. Plant Owners, process licensors, utility companies, engineering design consulting companies, EPC contractors and even regulatory authorities have started insisting on plant industrial automation and control systems, as well as safety instrumented systems to be designed in such a manner as to ensure cybersecurity. Cyber attacks on plants and facilities are growing and because these control and automation systems control physical assets (cyber-physical systems), it is all the more critical to ensure that the bad guys cannot break into them and cause havoc. Many of these organizations therefore insist that engineers and specialists, including IT professionals …

ICS Security training course gets advanced module

Abhisam is pleased to announce that the popular ICS security training course, which is available as an e-course online, will now have an advanced module that can be accessed by all current learners and GOLD members. This will have many sub modules such as concepts of Kill Chains, the MITRE ATT&CK framework for ICS, Honeypots for Industrial Automation and Control systems and more. Cybersecurity is a growing concern for all companies and organizations worldwide. However not many people are aware that IT security and OT Security are two different disciplines. IT security is what is done to make business IT systems secure (think banks, credit card unions or travel portals). OT stands for Operations Technology. Hence OT security refers to those systems that are used in manufacturing plants, storage terminals and similar to control processes and keep them safe. OT systems are primarily Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS for …

Abhisam Industrial IoT workshop in Pune in Sep 2018

Abhisam is excited to announce its fourth Pune workshop in September 2018 (7th and 8th Sep 2018)! After a slew of workshops in Mumbai and Pune, we will have the next Industrial IoT and Digitalization workshop in Pune on 7th and 8th Sep 2018. This Level 2 (Samurai) workshop will be a deep dive into the new Industrial Internet of Things and Digitalization technology that will revolutionize all industrial sectors. One of the myths perpetrated by many entities (incumbent automation vendors, engineering consultants and so on), about IIoT and Digitalization in plants such as oil and gas installations, petroleum refineries, chemical manufacturing plants, pharmaceutical bulk drug or formulation plants, power generating plants, mining sites, discrete parts manufacturing, autombile parts plants and so on is that they will not be impacted much because there are already digitized. This is actually a half truth. Just having some microprocessor based instruments that show …
