LOPA is short for Layers of Protection Analysis. This is a very popular technique, especially in the process industries to analyze the level of protection offered by every independent layer of protection.
Attending this two day classroom training workshop, alongwith accessing the online blended learning modules that are part of this training, will enable you to master this technique. This workshop is led by industry experts who have over two decades of wide ranging experience in design, installation, commissioning, operations and decommissioning of process plants in multiple countries. This makes the training workshop not just a theoretical exercise, but also a very practical one.
You will learn to first understand the basic concepts that drive this technique and then apply them to real life case studies (many of which you can directly use in your projects).
Where is this technique used?
This is used mainly in the process industries, such as Chemicals, Oil & Gas, Petroleum Refining, Power Generation, Nuclear and similar large industries, where assets, people and the environment need to be protected by using multiple protection layers.
So what are actually these layers of protection?
Every process plant has a control system at its center, that controls the plant. This may be comprised of one or many control systems including DCS (Distributed Control Systems), SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems), PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) as well as specialized systems such as OPS (Overfill Prevention Systems). Additionally there may be systems based on mechanical devices such as Safety Relief Valves, Blowdown systems, Flares, Scrubbers and so on. There may also be other layers of protection such as dikes surrounding storage tanks. All these layers of protection contribute to reducing the risk of damage to people, assets and the environment.
What are independent layers of protection?
For a layer of protection to be considered independent, there should not be any common elements that form part of both layers, or one layer should not be dependent on another layer functioning correctly in order for itself to function well. Only independent layers of protection can provide the necessary risk reduction.
How can attending this LOPA workshop help me?
Attending this workshop will give you a real world insight into how this is actually carried out in practice, with real life examples and cases. Led by industry professionals, you can absorb the knowledge that has been distilled out of doing many such studies over the years, so that you do not have to re-invent the wheel yourself. Make use of their knowledge and experience and leapfrog your peers.
You can also get certified as a LOPA professional if you take the associated exam and pass. You can also opt to take just a Participation certificate. Professionals who know LOPA and are certified are in great demand worldwide. So make use of this opportunity to learn and get certified.
What if I cannot attend this workshop now?
You can simply opt to take the Abhisam LOPA e-learning XPRTU based course which will be available soon. You can then learn from the comfort of your homw or office, or anywhere else.
